Russel Kenneth Sherman, 85, Washington, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at his home.
Russel was born April 27, 1933, in Foristell, to Charles Sherman and wife Pearl, nee Mumma. Russel attended school in Foristell. He was united in holy matrimony to Marilyn Boesch, Swiss, Nov. 10, 1956, at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Swiss. The couple made their home in Hermann and moved to Washington in 1959. The marriage was blessed with three children.
Russel worked in heel burnishing at International Shoe Factory before beginning his career in autobody repair. He retired from Tuggles Motor in 1995. Russel was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ and served his church community in various capacities over the years, including church council, cemetery board, building and grounds committee and as an usher. He also was a member of several local organizations, including the Sharpshooters Club, the Mariners, and he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Russel enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including carpentry and home remodeling, gardening, fishing, and playing a game of horseshoes, shuffleboard, washers and dartball.
Russel is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Marilyn Sherman, nee Boesch, Washington; three children, David Sherman and wife Darlene, Trimble, Debbie Holdmeier and husband Jim, Villa Ridge, and Steven Sherman, Washington; six grandchildren, Jeremy Sherman, Alysia (Kyle) Bond, Ashley Holdmeier, Matthew Holdmeier, Alexis Sherman and Thomas Sherman; two brothers, William "Pete" Sherman and wife Genevieve "Dot,"^ Flint Hill, and Donald Sherman and wife Velva, Marthasville; and two sisters, Margie (Harold) Sudbrock, New Melle, and Marcella (John) Daub, Kirkwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold Sherman and John Sherman; and three sisters, Margaret Maffer, Virginia Block and Della Cozad.
Visitation was held Thursday, May 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
A funeral service was held Friday, May 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Washington, with the Rev. Gary Schulte officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ Atrium Fund, Mercy Hospice Memorial Fund or Mercy Health Foundation.
Arrangements were in care of Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
