Russell David Duckworth

Mr. Russell David Duckworth, of Biloxi, MS., formally of New Melle, MO., passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020 with his family at his side. 


Russell was born on February 8, 1948 in St. Louis, MO., to the late Marshal and Ruth (nee: Williams) Duckworth.  He had reached the age of 72 years 7 months and 13 days. 

Russell was raised in New Melle and after high school he served our country in the United States Marine Corps.  He served for two tours in the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1969.  He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and was a member of the Alpha Company, 1st BN, 9th Marines, 3rd Division, they were known as "The Walking Dead". A book was written called "Operation Buffalo". It's about a search and destroy mission to secure the demilitarized zone (DMZ) on the North Vietnamese border. Russell fought in that battle and was one of the few to survive. He was the Radio Operator. The Marine unit began with 495 men and over half of them lost their lives. He returned home after serving in the Vietnam War and began college in Poplar Bluff, MO. He also worked at General Motors which helped pay for his Masters Degree in Engineering.  Russell served our country again, by joining the United States Air Force. Then he worked at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. as a civil engineer and draftsman, retiring in 2004. 

Russell Duckworth was preceded in death by his parents, Marshal and Ruth; his foster parents, Arthur and Laura King; his wife Judy Duckworth (nee: Bosworth); one foster sister, Marsha King.  He is survived by his significant other, Mary Spiegel; his children, Suzie Davis and husband Dennis, Scott Schuster and wife Shari, Michelle Brock and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Nadine Silver and husband Jeff, Donald J. Schuster, Brandi Wolf and husband Charlie, Kaitlin Brock, Brandon Brock; great grandchildren, Jeremy Silver, Mario Silver and wife Abigail, Martasia Silver, Natalia Silver, Caleb Jolly, Hailey Wolf, Zach Wolf; great great grandchild, Grant Silver; siblings, Walter Duckworth and wife Roberta, Lou Ann Kepner and husband Richard, Clifford Turner and wife Jan, Janice Mackey and husband David; nieces and nephews, Walter David Duckworth, Michelle Brewer, Raven Kepner, Chase Kepner, Nikki Leon; great nieces and nephews, Tyler Leon, Colin Leon; longtime friends, Richard Wilson and wife Elaine, Cindy Mustion, Kim Dickmeyer, Steve Garlotte, Tim Morris, other friends and family. 

The following is a partial list of Marines he served with: Captain Albert Slater, Captain Radcliff, Doc Rudolph, Bob Genty, Roy Ainsworth, Dennis "Top" Lee, R.G. Power, Harvey Geizer and David Sankey who he credited for saving his life. 

Visitation for Mr. Russell Duckworth will be held on Monday, September 28, 2020, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home in Warrenton.  Funeral services will also be held on Monday, September 28, 2020 at 12:00 PM at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at the Wright City Cemetery with full military honors. The family of Russell Duckworth has requested that everyone in attendance where a mask and follow the CDC 6 foot social distancing guidelines.
