Ruby Leigh, a local artist from Foley, recently won second place on the 24th season of “The Voice.” Some of you may be familiar with Ruby, as she is a performer in the area, and if you have witnessed her performance, you will never forget her.
At 16 years old, Leigh was the youngest singer this season. During the blind auditions, she yodeled the Western classic “I Wanna Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart.” John Legend was the first judge to turn his chair; the other three judges wasted no time doing the same. Ruby chose to be on Team Reba (McEntire), and the two hit it off immediately. They even yodeled together when her audition ended.
She maintained a perfect record going into the Finals, which made her a forceful contender. Four other finalists joined Ruby in the finale performances. Competitors performed a ballad and an up-tempo song in front of coaches Niall Horan, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Gwen Stefani. Leigh performed “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley and “Desperado” by the Eagles for the finale.
Leading up to the winner's announcement, Ruby thanked Reba McEntire for her support throughout the season. “I already feel like a winner,” Ruby commented. Reba wished her the best of luck and said, “You came in like a pro, the 16-year-old that you are.” Ultimately, Ruby won 2nd place, and her life has been a whirlwind since. Ruby's audition is now the most-watched audition in the show's 24 seasons. She was the only artist to go viral this season, doing so twice.
Ruby has had an intense passion for music since she was nine years old. She is drawn to the greats of Country Music, such as Hank Williams Sr, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, and Jimmy Rodgers. Their individuality and unique sounds appeal to her.
Ruby has compiled a list of over 200+ songs she has memorized. She never uses paper notes or digital instruments on stage to perform her music, and as Ruby says, “If you wanna be a singer, that’s your job to remember the words.” Ruby lives by another motto: Don’t Let Your Fears Be Bigger Than Your Dreams - something we should all live by. Ruby would like to thank her fans for their support throughout this whole experience, and she is ready to start performing for her audiences again. Congratulations to Ruby!
