Military Veterans Hosting Flag Retirement Collection June 14

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, MO – If you have a worn or damaged American Flag and want to ensure that it is disposed of respectfully, you can bring it to a veteran-run flag collection on June 14 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the St. Charles County Government Administration Building.

The annual flag collection at the corner of North Second Street and Monroe Street in downtown St. Charles is hosted by the St. Charles County Veterans Best Practices Working Group. Collected flags are donated to the American Legion for final disposal.

“As a proud American and a veteran of the United States Army, I fly my American flag daily in front of my house. As time goes on, the flag gets worn from the weather and needs to be replaced,” says Sgt. Donald Van, chair of the Veterans Best Practices Working Group.

“Some Americans may not realize the importance of how a worn flag is retired. The American Legion, once a year, properly and ceremoniously disposes of thousands of flags. I ask you to bring your flag to us at our collection site so we can give your flag the respect it deserves.”

The collection is a drive-thru drop-off, so you don’t need to leave your vehicle. Veteran volunteers will collect your flags directly from the car.

Since starting the collection in 2017, the veterans group has collected more than 14,000 flags for dignified disposal.

Anyone who can’t drop off their flags on June 14 can instead place them in designated flag collection boxes anytime. The boxes are outside the County Administration Building (201 N. Second Street, St. Charles) and at Veterans Tribute Park (1031 Kisker Road, Weldon Spring).

St. Charles County’s Veterans Best Practices Working Group was established in 2014. The group exists to foster a veteran-friendly employment environment for those who have served in the United States military, to encourage businesses in the community to develop similar veteran-friendly practices and to inform veterans seeking employment of available opportunities with the County Government.
