On May 3, Shawna Wheeler, Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce Chair, awarded two $1000 scholarships to deserving recipients, Ellie Hopen and Paige Walch.

Shawna read a few words from each winner's application. Paige wrote, “I have been able to meet some innovative and amazing people in this town and have been fortunate to hear their stories about the experiences they have had that have led them to where they are now. Knowing these people in our community has inspired me to forge my path and pursue what I am passionate about. It is my turn to create my future, with these inspirational people as my examples.” Paige is pursuing a major in Biology and plans to do genetic research. Ellie wrote, “I loved growing up in Augusta. The events, whether a parade or a ball game, united the community. I love how the town comes together with excitement and pride, and the connection I feel with my neighbors. That connection is something I want to bring into my career in medicine. Helping people in medicine also includes helping emotionally through difficult moments, just like our community does for one another.” Paige is pursuing an education and career in the medical field. It is the hope of the GACC and the Plein Air Committee that the scholarships will help students reach their life’s goals. The money raised to grant these scholarships comes from the proceeds of the Annual Augusta Plein Air Art Festival.
