Despite this popular adage, there soon will be a free lunch for New Melle area residents age 75 or older. Members of Friedens Peace United Church of Christ in New Melle are working to launch a new outreach program in 2018. The Abraham & Sarah Feast & Festivities program (also lovingly referred to as “Old Fogey’s Luncheon & Games”) is a quarterly event aimed at providing a hot meal and social interaction for seniors.
Area seniors age 75 or older, and their guest, are invited to attend a mid-day gathering centered around a luncheon meal. (Transportation will be available upon request.) The event will provide time for activities such as bingo, cards, or music, but most importantly an opportunity for seniors to socialize with other seniors. All of this is at no cost to those who attend, but your RSVP is required. The first event will be held in the handicap accessible church fellowship hall on Saturday, January 20th from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. RSVP by January 14th to reserve your spot.
Members of Friedens Peace are looking for area residents, businesses and/or organizations to partner with them to carry out the Feast & Festivities. Opportunities are available for all ages and include help with transportation, food, meal set-up/clean-up, organizing and executing the activity portion of the event, or monetary donations to help cover costs. Flyers will be distributed at the event to acknowledge community partners and promote their business or organization. The dream is to eventually expand this into a monthly event, giving everyone in the community a chance to get to know this exceptional group of residents.
