Over $6000 Raised in Kickin’ It for Cancer Kickball Tournament

The 2018 New Melle Festival Queen Pageant candidates were successful in hosting a memorable kickball tournament in loving memory of Trevor Joerling for the fourth year in a row. Despite there only be 2 candidates participating in the pageant program this year, we were able to host our most successful “Kickin’ it For Cancer” kickball event yet! Totals are still in the works, as there are some companies that have decided to match their employees donations, but we are on track to donate $6,000 in proceeds to the Friends of Kids with Cancer organization!

Even with a day full of rain, we were able to play all scheduled games with no weather delays. There were a total of 18 teams, including some tournament alumni - teams that have participated all four years - as well as some new faces! Two teams of employees from Mastercard even joined us this year and we were happy to have them. Something else new this year, we hosted a 50/50 raffle that netted $603. The winner of the raffle, Dan Bean, was announced prior to the quarter-final games and he generously donated all of the winning funds back to the cause. During this announcement time, we took a moment of silence for Trevor and watched as Todd, Brandee, and Darby released a purple lantern into the sky.

Our championship game, played by “#pitchesbetrippin” and the “Free Ballers” teams, ended at 12:00 am and made “#pitchesbetrippin” our tournament champions!

Our tournament could not have progressed through the evening so smoothly without the master bracket scheduler, Todd Joerling! Todd helped us place teams as they moved through their first games. A special thank you to Sharon, a Friends of Kids with Cancer representative that came out to the tournament to support the event and also offer some apparel for sale. Additionally, there is a huge list of business sponsors to thank, including: Elite Mechanical, Karrenbrock Construction, Tuepker Brothers Construction, Fireside Bar and Grill, Aqua Jim, Not Jaded Boutique and Tea Room, Overstock Outlet, New Melle Dental, Tall Wall Foundation Co., Blondin Professional Real Estate, Willming Excavating and Construction, Bavarian Smokehaus, Audrey Lee Photography, Randy Paul Construction, King Contracting, Contagious, Marbash Auto Sales, Pocket of Preschool, Catala Facial Retreat and Boutique, A & S Septic and Utilities, Ages and Stages Learning Center, Little Lamb Child Care and Learning Center, Bankhead Orthodontic Specialists, Grace Hauling, Hair Care by Rita, Maraca’s Mexican Family Restaurant, Wildschuetz Bros. Trucking, and People’s Savings Bank. Phew! That is a lot, but our gratitude is even greater than the list of those businesses!

Their generosity continues to energize our tournament and we simply could not have such tremendous success without them. The “Kickin’ it for Cancer” kickball tournament continues to be an energetic and hopeful tradition that brings our community together to celebrate and honor a wonderful family and our journey, as a community together, remembering Trevor.

If anyone would like to make a last minute donation before we send off the check, there is still time. Please contact Jenna Paul at This email address is being protected from spambots.
