The New Melle Festival Parade was held Saturday, June 16th, and the turnout was amazing. Over 40 participants registered for the event.
There were 15 (yes, fifteen) actual "floats" from businesses and organizations, plus three sets of clowns, plus several other UTVs, Vans, pick-ups, antique/classic cars, and lots of dump trucks! There were numerous walking groups including Francis Howell Football players and cheerleaders, students from Daniel Boone Elementary, St. Charles County Ambulance District Honor Guard, members of Girl Scout Troop 427 on horseback, members of the Boone Country 4-H Club, and Patriot Guard motorcycle riders. The parade lasted about 45 minutes from start to finish.
There were two winning floats. 1st place in the business category went to: Grace Hauling "Good Times at the Festival". The prize was free advertising at NMSR for a year.
1st Place in the non-profit category was St. John’s UCC-Cappeln with "Food Times/Picnic at the Church". They will receive a cash prize.
Serving as Grand Marshals this year were representatives of the New Melle Fire Department Board of Directors – Mike Moore, John Loyd and Rick Massey.
While several participants threw out candy for the little ones, there were a number of floats giving out other items to the spectators, including hot dogs, chicken wings, freeze pops, T-shirts, koozie cups, Frisbees, hats, beads, hair care products, stickers (and maybe a little New Melle Well Water here and there!) Kids that participated in the parade received vouchers for a free hot dog and drink at the festival grounds following the parade.
Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard over the past few months to rejuvenate the parade. And a big "Thank You" to all who put in the time and effort to create, build and decorate a float. The result was a fantastic parade – one for record books – and a great example of a community "Where old friends meet and new friends greet."
