Area Scouts Ensure Local Veterans’ Graves are Recognized

Boy Scouts of America Troop 856, New Melle, would not let Memorial Day go by without putting flags on area veterans’ graves. The troop, under the direction of Mark Apple and Chad Peters, upon hearing that Vets graves at Jefferson Barracks would not be adorned with flags this year due to the virus pandemic, contacted VFW 5651. They stated that the members of the Troop wanted to make sure our local Vets graves would not be forgotten.

The Troop took the flags and grave locations provided by VFW 5651 on May 22nd to decorate six area cemeteries: IHM Catholic Cemetery, New Melle; St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, New Melle; Methodist Cemetery, New Melle; Friedens UCC Cemetery, New Melle; St. Johns Cemetery, Cappeln; Femme Osage UCC Cemetery, plus around the Immigrant Monument in New Melle.

It is truly inspiring to see our youth perpetuating this tradition of Americanism. VFW Post 5651 thanks and salutes Troop 856 for their “Service”.
Since most Memorial Day Celebrations were postponed or cancelled, we hope many families took some time to visit one of these cemeteries to honor our deceased Veterans.
