New Melle Board of Aldermen Candidates

The only contested race in New Melle in the April municipal election is for Alderman, Ward 1. Voters will choose one of the following candidates to serve in that capacity.

Nik Bradley:  I have lived in New Melle for approximately 13 years.  We moved here from Decatur, Illinois in April of 2008. I have served as one of two aldermen representing Ward 1 in New Melle since 2013, and currently, I also serve on the New Melle Planning and Zoning Commission as the representative from the Board of Aldermen.  In Illinois, I served on a local school board. I also serve on committees and boards of other local volunteer organizations.

My professional background is in engineering. I am a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). I retired from Illinois Power Company (now part of Ameren Illinois) after approximately 35 years, having held a variety of engineering and engineering-related positions.  On a personal level, I don’t consider myself particularly special.  I believe that I have a good work ethic and am interested in serving wherever I am.  My wife and I have been married for over 55 years.  We have two daughters (and two sons-in-law), seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

As far as goals/needs for New Melle, the residents enjoy the “small town atmosphere” of the city.  We need to be aware of that as we deal with the population growth and neighboring cities moving toward New Melle. We also need to consider the needs and desires of our local businesses.  We continue to work toward installing additional sidewalks along Highway Z as well as street and drainage improvements in the city.

Sharon Duggan:  My family moved to the New Melle area (we lived off Meinershagen Road) in 1978. A year ago, I had the opportunity to move back to the area. I am excited to be back and I now live closer to my parents that have a home and farm near Treloar.

My professional background is in education. I have been teaching for 31 years. I have not held any prior offices, but my experience in communication, organization, and project management is something that I intend to use and is my skillset. I currently serve as a member of the Planning and Zoning Committee in New Melle and have been attending Board of Aldermen meetings.  I also worked for three years, part time, at a winery in Augusta, Missouri.  I love this area and I'm excited to be home again and want to give back to my community.

My goal for New Melle, if elected, is simple:  I want to listen, learn, and make smart decisions with the help of my constituents in order to keep New Melle aligned with its current vision statement.  I want to keep New Melle the small village-like town that our community will admire and support.
