New Melle's 1st Annual* Halloween Party on Saturday, October 30, enjoyed a great turnout and provided a great evening of family fun. A huge thanks goes out to all who helped make the event so successful: 48 businesses/individuals donated contest and attendance prizes, 21 families/businesses gave out candy in the "Trunk or Treat", four teams participated in the kickball tournament, 15 chefs participated in the chili contest and numerous people donated canned goods for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at IHM.
In the costume contest, prizes for Best Costume went to: Age 0-6 "Robot" Alex W.; Ages 7-11 "Deer" Riley C.; Ages 12+ "The Man in the Yellow Hat and Curious George" A.J. M. and Mace. The prize for the best costume in the adult category went to a group, "The Sanderson Sisters" from the movie, Hocus Pocus – Mary (Renee Betlach,) Winifred (Pam Crossett,) and Sarah (Rhonda DeGeal.)
Among the Trunk or Treat participants, the prize for the best display was awarded to "The Little Shop Of Horrors" by the Helmsing Family. The Johnson family's pirate theme was runner up.
In the Chili Contest, winners (determined by people's choice) were Andrea Carlstrom (1st place); Larry Winkler (2nd place) and Michelle Payne (3rd place.)
Four teams participated in the Kickball Tournament: The Still Kickin' It (dressed as little old ladies); Blondin's Ball Kicking Bovines (beef costume theme); The Night of the Kicking Dead (zombie theme); and the Alcoballics (Let's Get Smashed & Beer Belly t-shirts) who took home the first-place prize.
*This event was billed as the 1st Annual New Melle Halloween Party, but those of us who've been around awhile remember that there was, for many years, an annual Halloween party at NMSR (Community Club) in the 1990s-2000s. Initiated by the local churches, then later hosted by the New Melle Chamber of Commerce, and ultimately by the New Melle Lions Club, it was a longstanding tradition of family fun. It's great to see that small-town community spirit celebrated once again and revived under new leadership with new ideas. Congratulations and thank you to Donnie McCloud and Casee Trapp, and to everyone who helped with and supported this event. Job well done!
