A Holiday Tradition - New Melle Country Christmas & Parade - What a Great Event!

By Kathy Miller

The New Melle Country Christmas & Parade was a huge success with incredible weather for a very special evening to kick off the Christmas Holiday. This free event was held at New Melle Sports and Rec which was beautifully decorated with luminaries and holiday decorations. The event was co-sponsored by the New Melle Chamber of Commerce (NMCC), New Melle Sports and Rec (NMSR), and New Melle 411, and is held annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

There were indoor and outdoor activities and entertainment, free food and refreshments, all sponsored by area businesses and organizations. The evening is held in appreciation for the community’s support and patronage of the local businesses.
As the crowd waited for Santa and Mrs. Claus to arrive, families could decorate Christmas cookies, color pictures, write and mail letters to Santa or take a picture at the photo booth. Complimentary wassail, hot chocolate, popcorn, walking tacos, hot dogs, smores, cookies and punch were available. Jugglers, face-painters and balloon artists provided entertainment and LeLand and Whiskers put on a great magic show.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in the NMFPD truck. Inside the hall, families could take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus with a beautiful backdrop display. Goody bags were waiting for the kids after their visit. Around 6:00 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus lit the beautiful Norfolk Pine tree out front of NMSR and were then picked up by the NMFPD to begin the parade.

There was an excellent turnout for the parade with over 60 participants. Approximately $450 was collected, mainly from parade participants, and donated to New Melle Sports and Rec. Teddy Bears for Trevor collected 125 bears and an amazing $880 in donations. Over 6 boxes of canned goods were collected.

Kyle Shell, representing the NMCC and NMSR, and Mayor West both spoke. They thanked the community for their continued support of the many small business owners in the area; the New Melle Chamber of Commerce for the hard work and dedication; and all the volunteers and the planning committee for organizing this huge event every year.

A huge thank you to the following sponsors for their contributions.
