New Melle Fire Protection District

[Saturday, January 8, 2022] at 1937 hours the New Melle Fire Protection District received a call that an aircraft was in distress in the area of HWY D and HWY Z. While in route we began to receive reports that witnesses heard what sounded like an aircraft "going down" in the area of HWY F and Callaway Ridge Drive.

Crews from Wentzville Fire Protection District, Augusta, MO Community Volunteer Fire Department, Wright City Fire Protection District, Cottleville Fire Protection District, St. Charles County Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, St. Charles County Regional Emergency Management as well as St. Charles County Ambulance District assembled at the intersection of HWY F and Rugged Acres Drive to set up a command post and begin search operations.

The search was difficult due to weather conditions, limited visibility and difficult terrain. Search patterns were selected using witness reports and flight path information received from various sources.

The aircraft was a small twin-engine propeller aircraft that had left Spirit of St. Louis Airport with two souls on board and reached 8000 feet before experiencing trouble. The aircraft then appeared to turn back toward the airport before descending rapidly.

Crews used UTV's, drones, and searched on foot hoping to locate the aircraft and survivors, knowing that it appeared there was no fire after the crash. Crews located the aircraft at 2202 hours in a wooded area just off Rugged Acres Drive. The debris field was large and, after a brief search, it became evident that the crash was not survivable.

St. Charles County Police secured the area and remained on the scene until investigators from the FAA and NTSB could arrive in the morning.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families after this tragic event. #communityFIRST
