Oceans of Possibilities Summer Challenge 2022

By Shawna Wheeler, St Charles City-County Library

What will you be reading this summer? There are “Oceans of Possibilities” at your library. Our Summer Reading Challenge begins June 1. Maybe you are taking a vacation to the beach, a book makes a great vacation companion.  Books can actually be a great vacation in and of themselves, a vacay taken from your very own comfy chair.

Books are just the beginning of the possibilities for fun at your library. Be sure to check our Classes and Events Calendar. There are several ways to find what is right for you and your family. You can sort, by location or by age, by a certain date or a date range. For example, find out what is happening during the summer challenge, just sort using the dates June 1 to August 8.

Win prizes and books when you keep track of your reading minutes and yes there’s an app for that! Download “Beanstack Tracker'' from your app store and track your reading and activities using your phone or tablet. (Use “St. Charles City-County Library'' as your site when you set up your account.) You can also use Beanstack online through the Library's website. Or, you can track your progress using a paper game board. Print one from our website, MyLibrary.org, or pick one up at any Library branch.

Once you’re registered the fun begins! Kids, teens, and adults can ALL earn prizes for completing activities. There are lots of opportunities to read, but you can also earn by drawing, writing, cooking or baking, spending time outside, and MORE. Win books (to keep!); a colorful tote or sunglasses; a frisbee or a football rocket; and vouchers for food and fun at Wendy’s, Freddy’s, Amp Up Action Park, Kokomo Joe’s, or the O’Fallon Hoots. We will also have forty-eight grand prize winners, who will each win a $100 gift card. All ages are eligible to win. Can’t get enough? Ask for a bonus challenge sheet and earn more chances to win a grand prize. Keep up the good work to earn a Super Reader window cling or yard sign.

For budding artists ages pre-K to adult, we are looking for beautiful bookmarks to commemorate the Summer Challenge. Design a bookmark that has an Ocean theme and submit it for consideration. Winners will be selected in each age category. The first through third place designs will be printed and made available in our branches for all to enjoy.

Summer Challenge also encourages you to explore your St. Charles County community with the Summer Tour: Ocean Odyssey. Earn extra Summer Challenge prizes when you visit different library branches this summer. Discover a unique ocean creature at every branch on your tour. For example, the Augusta Branch will be a study of ocean fish. Boones Trail will be the place to study starfish and urchins. Your Summer Tour awaits! The ultimate adventurer will see the different ocean creatures in all eleven branches.

Get registration information, contest details, reading lists, and more information about the  Ocean Odyssey on our Summer Challenge web page. Make sure you are riding the summer challenge wave and be sure to register starting June 1!
