Nominations for VFW Teacher of the Year Award Due by October 31

The New Melle VFW Post 5651 is seeking local nominations for the National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Nominees are educators who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette, or patriotism. Great examples would be educators that plan field trips to city hall, organize community volunteer projects, invite veterans to speak in class or other activities that help students develop a better understanding of democratic values and beliefs.

The national awards include a $1,000 Past Commander-in-Chief John Smart award for each top K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 teachers for professional development expenses. An additional $1,000 for each winning teacher’s school, commemorative plaques and an all-expense-paid trip to the VFW National Convention.

If you know someone you feel is deserving of this award and would like to nominate them, download and complete the Smart/ Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award nomination form at www.vfw.org/community/youth-and-education. (Instructions and eligibility requirements can also be found on the site.) Then in 350 words or less, clearly state why you feel your nominee deserves this award and submit your nomination form, along with your explanation, by October 31, to the New Melle VFW Post 5651, P.O. Box 36, New Melle, MO 63365.

The local VFW Chapters will recognize one outstanding teacher in grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The local Posts then submit the winning names to the District-level judging, the state level, and the VFW National Headquarters for consideration in the national awards contest. Winners will be announced after February 1, 2023.
