The New Melle Planning Commission will hold a Work Session meeting on Wednesday,  Oct. 21, 2010 at City Hall at 4 p.m. (Yes, 4 p.m. to accommodate the schedule of a consultant from the University of Missouri.)

The Planning and Zoning Commission is considering an overlay district for the "downtown" part of New Melle. 

Overlay Districts (or Overlay Zones) are in many ways like any zoning district – they provide development regulations within a specified boundary. These districts are special zones that lie on top of multiple existing zoning districts to modify the underlying district requirements without changing individual parcel zoning. Overlay Districts are often used for historical preservation and mixed use development. Those interested in how New Melle might use an overlay district to encourage development in "downtown" New Melle while protecting existing residential properties might want to attend meetings and follow the discussions as this idea is pursued.
