Thiemann-Tidd VFW Post 5651 in New Melle announced the recipient of this year’s Voice of Democracy scholarship contest was Abigail Hunt of Foristell.
The VOD scholarship program provides high school students the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 40,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
Hunt took second place in VFW Department of Missouri, District 9, Voice of Democracy competition. Out of 18 VFW posts in District 9 there were several hundred contestants. The number of members at a post determines the number of contestants each post can sponsor. The New Melle VFW was allowed to sponsor only one contestant.
The photo above was taken at VFW Post 2482 in St Clair, MO during the quarterly District 9 meeting January 14, 2018. Top contestants, and their parents, for the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen programs in the district were recognized for their achievements. Only the first place winner from each district is allowed to advance to the state level competition.
This year’s Voice of Democracy theme asks high school students to describe, “American History: Our Hope for the Future.” Hunt received $500 from the New Melle VFW Auxilliary as well as a district level award.
